Scotland Yard confirmed that four men have been arrested as part of the investigation into payments from journalists to police officers.

The men, aged 29 to 56, were detained at addresses in London and Essex earlier today (January 28th) as part of the ongoing Operation Elveden, which is being run in conjunction with Operation Weeting – the investigating into phone hacking.

According to a police spokesman, the latest developments come after News Corporation, which owned the defunct News of the World newspaper, gave information to investigators.

A serving Metropolitan Police officer was among those taken in for questioning.

The 29-year-old is part of the Met's Territorial Policing Command and was arrested at work in a central London police station.

He is currently being held on suspicion of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906, misconduct in a public office and conspiracy in relation to those charges.

The other men, aged 48 and 56, are being questioned on suspicion of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906, aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office and conspiracy to commit both offences.

Officers are currently searching the home addresses of the men, as well as the News International offices.
