Disney has lifted a 60-year ban that prevents men at the company's Florida and California theme parks from having facial hair.

According to Reuters, it is an historic move for the animation studio, which has long been famous for its strict dress code policies.

Disney still forbids visible tattoos, body piercing, "extreme" hairstyles or colours, while women were barred from wearing tank tops until 2010. They can now wear sleeveless tops, but the straps must be three inches wide.

The firm had the restrictive policies in place because they wanted to create a clean-cut image of their workers. However, the changes have been brought in because Disney wants to remain "current".

Firms have come under fire in the past for imposing clothing bans that violate employees' civil rights.

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch was involved in a legal wrangle with a Muslim employee over their wearing of a headscarf to work.
