My time as an intern was very enjoyable. Through my placement I was given the opportunity to
develop my reporting skills such as sourcing news stories and dealing with press officers.
It also gave me an insight into what it is like to work in a news agency, and opened my eyes to a
career path I had not considered before.
I learned a lot about where news stories come from (especially at a national level) and how to put a
unique angle on them.
The staff were really friendly and gave really good advice both on the work you had to do and how
to make it in the industry. I think I have grown in confidence since doing this internship.

Feedback - I found the Adfero internship very insightful. As I was working on the research side of things I was able to appreciate more of what goes on behind the scenes, the sort of things that you don't think about- i.e. originally sourcing the quotes, which in fact are key to most stories. I stated in my feedback immediately after the internship that I felt it could have been perhaps more varied i.e. tests on user generated content. Nevertheless, I enjoyed interviewing individuals, generally talking to people and working within an office environment. As the internship progressed I felt that I was becoming more confident with those I was interviewing i.e. asking my own questions I felt necessary, rather than reproducing those coming from the journalists. With the help of my desk head, I was also able to learn from my mistakes in transcription i.e. inserting square brackets into transcripts etc, which ultimately added to the experience. More than anything I enjoyed seeing my work that was done (retrieving of quotes) being used to generate original stories of their own.

Feedback - I did and learnt a great deal more than I expected to in a relatively short two week period. From the start I was made to feel very welcome by Ross and the team, and my introduction to Adfero was fairly comprehensive. The main skills I picked up whilst working for Adfero were how to research and write news stories. To that end my desk heads assistance - his patience and editorial eye - was invaluable. It was very satisfying to see my news stories appear on client websites. Possible improvements (and there's always room for improvement!) include providing more "how to" templates from the very start, and extending the work experience to one month, which would provide plenty of time to become fully competent as a researcher and look more substantial on a CV. In short, great people and a great work environment! Thank you!
